The double-barrelled ceremony of the opening of the Narrows Ferry Causeway at the Lake Manitoba Narrows, Manitoba. |
Mrs. Chris Haldorson cuts the ribbon accompanied by the Premier of Manitoba, Douglas L. Campbell; later the Premier Campbell unveiled a plaque commemorating the origin of the name "Manitoba" (meaning: Spirit of the Narrows, or Spirit of the Strait, or Lake of the Prairies). A Highland Piper in a kilt on the left is playing the bagpipes. Between 3500 and 5000 people from all parts of Manitoba attended. The late Mr. Halldorson was the MLA from St. George who had fought for construction of the ferry that he had considered so necessary for those in the Interlake.
